Swit·zer·land
a country in western Europe with many mountains and lakes, surrounded by France, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Population: 7,283,000 (2001). Capital: Bern. Switzerland is a
neutral country (=one that does not support any side in a war) . It remained neutral in both World War I and World War II, and it does not belong either to the
EU or to the
UN. It is also a world centre for banking. People from Switzerland are called
Swiss.
